An Animated Conversation with Joanna Quinn

On the 28 of February internationally acclaimed and Oscar nominated animator Joanna Quinn visited Cardiff School of Art and Design.

In the first of a series of Animated Conversations Joanna discussed her working methods, influences, and philosophy of drawing and animation with Owen Stickler, Programme Director for Animation.

Joanna talked passionately and amusingly about her belief in creating strong female characters such as her most famous creation ‘Beryl’ from ‘Girls Night Out’, ‘Body Beautiful’ and ‘Dreams and Desires’ and her commitment “to produce high quality, accessible animation which is observationally based and explores significant aspects of the contemporary human experience, often using humour as an essential element

Two of Joanna’s most highly regarded films the Oscar shortlisted ‘Britannia’ and Oscar nominated ‘Dreams and Desires – Family Ties’ were screened to a packed audience of Animation, Illustration and Graphic Communication students. Joanna gave extraordinary insight in to her animation technique and gave students a unique opportunity to view development sketchbooks and original drawings from her films.
