BA Graphic Communication hosts the International Society of Typographic Designer’s Main Student Assessment 2018

The BA (Hons) Graphic Communication course was delighted to host the International Society of Typographic Designer’s Main/UK Student Assessment in March this year. The International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD), whose members include prolific designers such as Erik Spiekermann, Wim Crouwel, Margaret Calvert and Alan Kitching, is a professional body run by and for typographers, graphic designers and educators. The Society has an international membership who share and support its aim to create and inspire interest in all forms of typographic communication.

Working closely with education and industry, ISTD establishes, maintains and promotes typographic standards through the forum of debate and design practice. Membership is awarded to practising designers, educators and graduating students who demonstrate, through the quality of their work, their commitment to achieving the highest possible standard of visual communication.

BA (Hons) Graphic Communication Programme Director and ISTD Educational Board Member David Wrenne said “It was brilliant to host the ISTD Main Assessment in Cardiff this year. We entered our students into the Assessment Scheme for the first time in 2017 and two of our students were successful in gaining the ISTD accreditation which was fantastic. As the hosting university this year, we saw assessors join us from Lebanon, Australia, The Netherlands, Northern Ireland and all over the UK including graduates from the BA Graphic Communication course who are now established graphic design professionals in their own right.

The level of experience in the room was awe inspiring! Assessment teams are a combination of graphic design professionals and design educators who give their time for free to assess the diverse range of typographic practice, entered by students from all over Europe. Fingers crossed for our students who entered this year!“

Students who are successful gain accreditation and become members of the International Society of Typographic Designers, They are also invited to an award ceremony in prestigious design agency Pentagram in July.
