Level 6 BA (Hons) Graphic Communication students Laura Fieldhouse, Maris Latham, Izzy Young, Allegra Bozetarnik and Thomas Collins were all awarded membership of the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) for their editorial typographic practice in response to ‘Lost’, a brief set by the society.
Students examined the concept of loss in a truly diverse manner. Laura explored the loss of authenticity in communication as a result of developments in digital technology, while Maris explored a truly evocative subject matter by “finding” her great grandfather Gomer, built through the memories of her living family members. Izzy explored the potential loss of identity through cosmetic surgery while Allegra focused on her experiences and the histories of the East vs the West and how they differentiate regarding women’s rights and their agency. Tom’s project examined the unique relationship hoarders have with objects and observed their difficulties with decluttering and the fear of loss that arises through this experience.
BA (Hons) Graphic Communication Programme Director David Wrenne said “Tackling industry-set competition briefs and opportunities to pursue professional accreditation plays an important role in readying our students for the ‘real world’ after graduation. We are delighted and very proud that five of our students have been accredited this year with a diverse exploration of concepts and beautifully crafted typography. ISTD is an internationally recognized society, and our students will become members alongside renowned designers such as Margaret Calvert, Erik Spiekermann, Philippe Apeloig and the late Freda Sack but to name a few. The course has been entering ISTD for the past three years and have now gained nine members in total which is a fantastic achievement. Though not all students that entered were shortlisted, we are equally proud of their tenacity and they all developed fantastic portfolio entries that showcases their typographic skillset.
All accredited students have been invited to an awards ceremony at the world famous design agency Pentagram in London in July this year.
