Graduating CSAD Ceramics student Frances Lukins will soon be published in the July/August edition of the international journal Ceramic Review as part of an educational article exploring the ethos of the ceramics course at CSAD.
Taking the reader through her initial experiences of clay in evening classes, to her implementation of a new business model at her Coffee bar ‘Lufkin Coffee’ Frances explains the impact of the interdisciplinary culture at CSAD on her personal aesthetic and hopes for the future. Frances studied ‘art and social conscience’ as part of her degree as well as conducting an in-depth study into the alchemy of materials. Her dissertation pulled these threads together exploring how her studio practice could be used to affect the experience of others.
Frances’ innovation lies in her ability to encourage a heightened sensorial state of mind through composition of ceramic and other natural materials and these ‘still lives’ were used as a direct means to help customers transition from the business of the world to a calmer enjoyment of their beverage. A true artisan coffee experience!
